Funny Lady
Dir: Herbert Ross
1975
***
Funny Lady is part 2 of the fictional biopic of entertainer extraordinaire, Fanny Brice. Much like the first film, large chunks of fact are missing, characters such as her daughter are forgotten and the passing of time is unclear. It doesn't help that the 1970's, the decade the film was made in, pokes through what is supposed to be a film set in the 30's. One musical number in particular couldn't be more 70's if it tried, there would be uproar if it were on stage in the 30's. All that aside, it's another great musical. Barbra Streisand is just as good as she was in Funny Girl and James Caan adds the kick up the bum the first film was lacking in my opinion. The songs maybe less memorable but they're still of high quality, the synchronized swimming routine being a highlight of the film.
