My Son The Fanatic
Dir: Udayan Prasad
1997
****
While the world was getting over excited about The Full Monty and mistaking it for what the late 90's England was really like, they were missing quality films like My Son the Fanatic. Gritty, low budget film making at its very best and with an original story to tell. It's one of the more original Anglo-Indian films made in the last thirty or so years that tackles subjects that people only really started to talk about ten years later rather than the usual cliches. Om Puri is one of the best actors working today and is criminally under-appreciated. A good story will always prevail, the performances and script are perfect, this is the sort of film that should be being made in the UK instead of just the American blockbusters and the likes of The Full Monty et al.
