Patton
Dir: Franklin J. Schaffner
1970
*****
A truly unique War film and mysterious biopic. Patton himself is a character to be explored, concentrating on only his involvement in WW2 was a wise move. It can be seen as both pro-war and as patriotic propaganda and also as an anti-war piece. In the end I think it just points out the sad fact that war is always inevitable, whether we like it or not, some people have to fight and see no other way. You could analyse this film until the cows come home but what is undeniable is that is is beautifully filmed, the intro is one of the most striking and powerful in cinema and George C. Scott's performance is one of the all time greats.
