The Lego Movie
Dir: Phil Lord, Christopher Miller
2014
****
Cinephiles disagree on many things but product placement is generally not one of them. It's a particular pet hate of mine, so you could say I was apprehensive about seeing what is probably the biggest product placement movie of all time. It's ok though, I had a good long chat with the 10 year old me and we've agreed that it's ok, Lego is special. The writers of The Lego Movie know this and have made a film that not only understands the product, they also understand the fans. Lego is that rare toy that does feed the imagination as well as exercise the brain. Instruction vs. Imagination and the ability to excel at both. It's a pretty deep concept for a film about toys. The big revelation is nothing short of brilliant, combined with a great sense of humour and a well balanced mix of CGI and stop motion, it's an irresistible formula. That song though, it's still in my head after nearly a week and it's starting to hurt.
