Ruby Sparks
Dir: Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris
2012
****
That was Annette Bening? Throughout the film I thought it was Catherine O'Hara. Weird. Anyway, Ruby Sparks, good film. A cross between Sim0ne and Weird Science but without any of the computer nonsense (and in the case of Weird Science, not as much fun). So basically Weird Science for the kids that prefer poetry rather than the pursuits of getting laid. I jest. It's a perfectly lovely sci-fi romance that you don't have to be a Star Trek fan to understand. Interesting to see that it was written by Ruby Sparks herself, Zoe Kazan. A bit egotistical casting yourself as your own idea of nice guy's object of desire but I guess you need that kind of self-promotion/confidence to make it in Hollywood. She's written a good story so why not. Actually, the story is flawed and the last scene isn't very good or at least not the best idea I think she could have come up with, although I liked the way it got a bit dark towards the end. The eclectic cast was great and if Elliott Gould was everyone's psychologist then there would be nothing wrong with the world.
