Huie's Sermon
Dir: Werner Herzog
1981
****
Huie's Sermon is an impossible film to class. I suppose fly-on-the-wall documentary is as close as anything as to what it is. Herzog doesn't narrate or push the film in any direction, Huie's Sermon is an uninterrupted one take that gives Huie just enough rope to hang himself with. On the face of it it looks like a joyful event full of music and praise, it's only when the words sink in do you realise the true horror of what is really going on. Herzog raises awareness and lets the audience decide. I've read conflicting reviews of this film, some by people who obviously didn't actually listen to what Huie was saying and I believe this blindness is still apparent today. A real eye opener for many, still now several decades later.
