The Raven
Dir: James McTeigue
2012
***
James McTeigue's The Raven is a fictional story of the last days of Edgar Allen Poe. His death remains a bit of a mystery and this story plays on that. A serial killer is discovered to be murdering individuals based on Poe's gruesome stories so the police ask Poe to help them in their investigation. It's a premise that I quite like although I'm not sure that film is the best medium for it. This is graphic novel idea, something that the great Alan Moore might write and indeed I think it would be quite popular. Although the special effects and production look great, the script, performances and choice of cast leave a lot to be desired. It just doesn't really work as well as it could but I enjoyed it and appreciate its originality and otherness.
