Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe
Dir: Les Blank
1980
****
Werner Herzog is a man of his words. When discussing film with friend Errol Morris, he promised that he would eat his own shoe if Morris ever made his then touted Gates of Heaven. It was enough to encourage Morris to make the film and it was a great success upon release, so Herzog not only ate his shoe but he did so in front of a crowd of film students and journalists as way of encouragement and to publicise Morris's debut. During the cooking and preparation we are treated to delicious little morsels of enlightenment and advice that only Herzog himself could give. A must for wannabe film makers.
