A Long Way Down
Dir: Pascal Chaumeil
2014
**
Based on the novel by Nick Hornby, A Long Way Down's structure is the same in the film but it has very little about it that makes the book a compelling read. The beginning sequence where all the characters meet should have been as awesome as it was in the book but it wasn't. It was lackluster and uninteresting. It didn't make sense and it just didn't work as either a comedy or a drama, or indeed a black comedy. While I can see why each actor was chosen, each delivers an inappropriate performance but I blame the director rather than them, as it's obvious that each talent (apart from Imogen Poots maybe) has not been given full artistic reign to do what they do best. It's an empty shell of what it could and should have been with very few redeeming features, with only Imogen Poots performance worth watching for - although even then she's a little bit annoying. A waste of a good idea.
