Cabaret
Dir: Bob Fosse
1972
*****
For me, Bob Fosse's 1972 musical Cabaret is all about Liza Minnelli. She oozes charm and sex appeal and is a great singer to boot. The style, the songs, the great performances.. everything is pitch perfect. It's no surprise to me it is regarded as one of the greatest musicals of all time. It's almost the anti-musical of all musicals that came before it in many ways, it hasn't really been bettered (or should I say matched) until maybe Dancer in the Dark which also stared the fantastic Joel Grey. Iconic, irresistible and utterly brilliant.
