The Cowboy and the Frenchman
Dir: David Lynch
1988
***
Made for French TV as part of a collective piece (Werner Herzog, Andrzej, Luigig Comencini and Jean-Luc Godard also contributed) on how the French are thought of around the world called 'The French as Seen By...'. It's Lynch having fun but it's his uncertain integrity that puts me off somewhat. It's always a pleasure to see the great Harry Dean Stanton and I like a bit of slap-stick but it is never clear what Lynch is trying to say or achieve here. I'm neither American nor French and somehow I find it a tiny bit offensive. Maybe it's my common sense?
