Heaven KnowsMrAllison
Dir: John Huston
1957
****
It's all about the performances in John Huston's 1957 War drama, Heaven Knows Mr. Allison. I liked the story until it got a bit preachy and before the uncomfortable and unnecessarily explored romance sequences but there is something quite timeless and ever watchable about it. Again, probably because of the brilliant performances but when you've got Deborah Kerr and Robert Mitchum you can't really go wrong. It is directed beautifully, the slight and subtle wisps of comedy are handled well and the script is fantastic. It does, at times, look like Robert Mitchum wanders into uncomfortable territory as the actions of his character are unlike his personal persona or like any character he's played before, dare I say it, but maybe the film could have been longer, so that the characters were given enough time to really develop.
