Wrong Turn at Tahoe
Dir: Franck Khalfoun
2009
**
Wrong Turn at Tahoe is a simplistic gangster/revenge film that will feel familiar to fans of the genre. There is much to admire in Franck Khalfoun's 2009 film but it is very difficult not to watch it without being reminded of other films of its ilk. I promised myself I wouldn't compare it to Pulp Fiction because doing so is a bit of a lazy cliche with film reviewers but the dialogue and situations are pure Tarantino knock offs. However, the biggest crime comes as they lift a classic and quite infamous scene from The Crying Game (no, not that bit, another scene). Wrong Turn at Tahoe is based on a short film and is essentially a slightly longer version of and it shows. The acting is fine but no one really stands out. The viewers enjoyment seems to be based on their personal familiarity of the genre but the makers forget that familiarity can breed contempt.
