Elephant White
Dir: Prachya Pinkaew
2011
***
There is something a little disjointed about Prachya Pinkaew's 2011 spiritual thriller Elephant White. It's part straight-to-video action, part mythological Buddhist ghost story and part lecture on the very real horrors of the sex-slave trade and child prostitution in the east. Not a mix you come across everyday. It works too for most of the film, the only real distractions being questionable editing, predictability and Kevin Bacon's awful attempts at an English accent. Djimon Hounsou is a convincing hired assassin and plays the part well, that is up until the point whereby he actually has to shoot people, and then you start to wonder. It's messy and not very well produced but it has a quirkiness to it that appealed to me, hence the generous rating.
