Waltzes from Vienna (AKAStrauss' Great Waltz)
Dir: Alfred Hitchcock
1934
***
1934's Waltzes from Vienna has hints of Alfred Hitchcock's greatness but is just before he became the acomplished director we remember. His use of light and shadow, his signature cuts and compositions and his sense of humour are all present here but they haven't quite reached their full potential, or at least it's not as good as we know was yet to come from him. It's still great to see how he improved and evolved in what is a very different film of his. Still, a great film with fantastic performances from Jessie Matthews, Frank Vosper and the great Edmund Gwenn being my favourite.
