Searching for Sugar Man
Dir: Malik Bendjelloul
2012
*****
Malik Bendjelloul's thoroughly engaging documentary Searching for Sugar Man is a who, when, where and what the hell mystery that grabs the viewer's interest right from the beginning. It manages to explore all the weird and wonderful rumors (such as he set fire to himself live on stage) surrounding the little known musician Rodriguez without sensationalizing them further and reveals the weird and wonderful truth behind him instead. Inspiring and gripping throughout with what has to be one of my favourite soundtracks of all time and one of the most truly wonderful conclusions too. Rodriguez really should have been the next Bob Dylan and that is no exaggeration. One of the best films of 2012, see the film and then buy the records.
