In my opinion Mimic is the only blip in Guillermo del Toro career so far. This isn't really him though, this is him working for an American studio, showing them what he can do and gaining some trust. It's an okay horror but The Relic that came out the same year is much better and damaged Mimic's box office taking somewhat. It's not without del Toro's signature scares and creepiness but it's hard to see any of the greatness we saw in his amazing debut Cronos that he made four years previous. Like I say though, lessons learn't and every film he's made since has been awesome.
